UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) Several Penn State stu
dents and faculty received awards
at the annual meeting of the
American Society of Agricultural
Engineers. This year’s meeting
was held in Quebec in June.
Bradley W. Wright, doctoral
candidate in agricultural engineer
ing: Dr. Harvey Manbeck, profes
sor of agricultural engineering;
and Steven Shaler, instructor of
forest resources, received an
ASAE Paper Award-Honorable
Mention for the refereed publica
tion, “Performance of Glue-
Laminated Preservative-Treated
Columns.” published in the Trans
actions of the ASAE. Wright
wrote the paper based on his mas
ter’s thesis research which he
completed at Penn State. No more
than 2.5 percent of all papers pub
lished in the Transactions received
an ASAE Paper Award or an hon
orable mention.
Dr. Robert Graves, professor of
agricultural engineering; Patrick
Richie, multi-county extension
agent based in Berks County: and
Manbcck received a blue ribbon
award for their extension circular.

for Cleaning Ease.” The blue rib
bon award is given for extension
educational materials that receive
a score of 90 percent or higher by
a group of peer judges.
Marlin Sailus, manager of the
Northeast Regional Agricultural
Engineering Service; Dr. Wilmot
Irish, professor of agricultural
engineering at Cornell University;
and Graves received a blue ribbon
award for the NRAES publication,
“Planning Dairy Stall Bams.”
Louis A. Kopczyk, a May 1989
B.S. graduate of agricultural engi
neering, received a blue ribbon
award for the computer program,
“Vegetated Parabolic Waterway
Design.” He was advised on the
project by Dr. James H. Hamlctt,
assistant professor of agricultural
engineering.
Timothy S. Stombaugh, another
May 1989 graduate, received the
ASAE Student Honor Awan). The
award recognizes outstanding
scholarship and general participa
tion in student activities. The reci
pient is elected by his or her
respective ASAE student organi
