AM-Lancwtw Fanning, Saturday, August 26, 1889 Plenty Of BY PAT PURCELL ELIZABETHTOWN (Lancaster Co.) His name was synonom ous with “Sexy" and “Quiet”. Sexy refers to one of the finest Holstein cows in Pennsylvania, QueCn Star Sexy and quiet refers to the owner and exhibitor of the champion, Thomas McCauley. McCauley was hnored with the supreme champion tide for three years in the six years of showing at the fair. McCauley and Sexy will not take home the supreme champion trophy. McCauley and Sexy were not in the ring when the grand champion was selected. For the first lime in since 1982, McCauley did not compete at the Elizabeth town Fair. McCauley is in State College preparing for the start of his freshman year at Penn State University. However, Irving Myers, , a Jersey breeder formerly of Illinois and now the herdman at Em-Tran, Inc. in Elizabethtown, had no trou ble filling the void left by Queen Star Sexy at the Elizabethtown Fair Dairy Show. Actually two exceptional dry cows presented Myers with his most difficult deci sion of the day. He eventually made both of these mature cows his grand and reserve grand champions. Joe WivcU’s 4-year-old and and the 8-year-old owned by Susan Howes were two lovely bodied cows, said Myers. The difference in age made little difference in the desirability of these two dairy ani mals. Both had the size and scale, dairyness, with the correct fore and rear udder attachment and teat placement. However, a slight advantage in the udder tipped the scales toward WivelTs Doncgal- Creck Chairman Greta, the dry cow class winner. “I must go with the cow today with her wedding dress on. SHe has the advantage today,” said Myers. As a 3-year-old she produced 18,000 pounds with a 4.0 percent test. She was due to calf in 10 days with her third calf. The Elizabeth town show was a Erst ever for Gre ta. She is a VG-87. Howes 8-year old took the reserve grand title. Howes graciously accepted her reserve championship, as it is a custom which McCauley began, for the grand champion owner to treat everyone in the dairy show to a milkshake at the fair stand. Danielle Ayers captured the junior and grand championship in the junior show. Her champions was an impressive senior yearling, C Brye Ayer Typcmaker Rose. Rose was a bargain at $7OO the price Danielle and her father paid for her in Canada last year. Joe Ayers selected Rose because she was six inches taller than the rest of heifers and she stood taller in many ways throughout the show, too. Myers selected this beautifyl senior yearling as the supreme champion of the show. “This is a big, powerful heifer. And I don’t usually do this, butl’m going to have to go with her for my grand champion. I can’t say enough about her she's tall with a lot of style and moves exceptional ly well on those hind feet and legs," said Myers. Justin Howes to the the reserve junior championship inthe open show. Senior champion of the junior show and the grand reserve title went to Jason Wivell. The reserve senior champion of the junior show was shown by Nicki Wivell. Grand champion of the junior show went to senior year ling shown by Danielle Ayers. Supreme Quality At Elizabethtown Dairy Show Ayrshire The Ayrshire junior champion was exhibited by Angie Spickler of Mount Joy. This first place inter mediate calf clean cut on top and tight in the crop area, carried out well on the hind feet with good size and scale. The reserve junior champion was the intermeidate yearling heifer calf shown by Heather Becker of Gap, another exceptional junior animal. Both -became the grand champions of the Ayrshire breed show with no entries in the cow classes. Guernsey The Henisee' family swept the Guernsey show championships. John captured the open junior championship with his senior year ling. Reserve junior champion in the open show went to Dave Heni see who also showed the junior champion of the junior show.
