Berks Holstein Club Holds A Black And White Night
BY VAL VANTASSEL
Berks Co. Correspondent
MYERSTOWN (Berks Co.)
Attending the Berks Co. Holstein
Club’s annual picnic Friday night
was like taking part in a black
and-white fashion show. Holsteins
on skies, Holsteins on the beach
and Holsteins with big eyes decor
ated brightly colored sweatshirts.
Entire herds strolled acrossed
sweaters. There were hand painted
Holsteins, Holstein hats, neck
laces and pins not to mention the
numerous Pa. Holstein jackets.
Berks breeders just love their
animals.
It was soon evident that the
farmers knew their breed well.
The group had the opportunity to
judge three classes of Holsteins on
the George and Mary Troutman
farm, Myers town. Men, women
and youths compared sizes, exa
mined udders and checked back
lines while official judges Duane
Stump and Gary Bicksler made
their choices. In the crowd were a
number of outstanding former 4-H
and FFA judges as well as the
folks which had trained them.
In the end the difference
between the first and sixth place
was miniscule, four points for the
men, six points for the women and
eight points for the youths. All
three first-place winners scored
148.
Leading the pack for the men
was Todd Miller of Hamburg,
closely followed by David Pool.
