Watershed Association Wins
Conservation Award
HARRISBURG The Little
Clearfield Creek Watershed Asso
ciation (CCWA) has named
Watershed Organization of the
Year by the Pennsylvania Associ
ation of Conservation Districts.
The award ceremony will take
place on October 3, during the
joint annual conference of the
Pennsylvania Association Conser
vation Districts and State Conser
vation Commission to be held in
State College, Pennsylvania.
The CCWA has made signific
ant strides in improving the qual
ity of life within its 27,000 acres
of rural land spanning Clearfield
County. In September of 1987, the
Environmental Quality Board
ruled to upgrade the creek to a
high quality, cold water fishery as
a result of water quality improve
ment promoted by CCWA.
Since recreation is the main use
of the creek, the Association is
working to better the creek so it
can continue to support the
stocked and native fish for recrea-

practices will decrease soil ero
sion, reduce fertilizer runoff and
improve nutrient management.
The Association has been
extremely active in working with
the Bureau of Mining and Recla
mation (BMR) and the mining
industry in order to reduce pollu
tion, particularly sediment. Such
studies included water testing as
well as collecting water samples
for the BMR.
The Pennsylvania Association
of Conservation Districts is a pri
vate, non-profit organization rep
resenting Pennsylvania’s 66 coun
ty conservation districts. Activi
ties include education,
information and representation on
the state and national levels in
soil, water and related resource
management
