The Glatfelter Pulp Wood
Company is the forest manage
ment subsidiary of the P.H. Glat
felter Company in Spring Grove,
Pennsylvania. The Pulp Wood
Company manages more than
100,000 acres of forestland in
Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland
and Delaware and provides forest
management assistance to other
forest land owners in'that region.
Recent statistics show that fore
st management efforts in the Pulp
Wood Company’s Pennsylvania
district are producing benefits for
more than just the trees. Company
activities which are part of its nor
mal harvesting operation, as well
as actions that go above and bey
ond standard operating procedures
are also improving the forests for
Pennsylvania’s wildlife. These
activities include protecting exist
ing sources of food, water and
shelter and, in some cases, creat
ing more.

Lange, president of Lely Corpora
tion, announced the purchase of
the import and distribution rights
to the Kioti tractor line for the
United States and Canada. This
transaction took place in Portland,
OR. on July 14, 1989.
TTie new company, Lely Kioti,
Inc., will be based in Wilson, NC.

Glatfelter Pulp Wood Protects Wildlife

bluebird boxes were built and
donated to scout troops and other
groups for placement Such efforts
attract wild species into new areas
and supplement existing nesting
sites. Preserving “natural” nesting
sites is part of Pulp Wood Com
pany activities, too, as den trees
are among those trees reserved
from harvesting operations.
Wildlife food supplies were
both protected and enhanced last
year. Food-producing trees such
as serviceberry, wild cherry and
hickory were purposely left stand
ing in some sale areas and food
plots covering 12 acres were deve
loped in others. These plots were
seeded with the Pennsylvania
Game Commission’s Food &
Cover mix or a combination of
legumes and grasses. 12S0 wild
life provided by the Game
Commission, were also planted,
and almost two dozen apple trees
were pruned and released from
overhead shade. That manage
ment practice improves growing
conditions and increases the crop
