The advent of hot, humid summer weather nearly always causes heat stress in lactating cows
resulting In lowered production & reproductive efficiency. The stress on cows is even greater when
humidity is high.
Provide plenty of shade, water & ventilation to keep the cattle as comfortable as possible during
summer heat stress. Misting cows with water will help reduce body temperatures if there is suffi
cient ventilation to remove the build-up of humidity in the misting area.
If dry matter intake is reduced, ration energy should be increased by adding fat. This will increase
nutrient density without reducing fiber which is even more necessary for good rumen function
during stress. Adding buffers may help butterfat when dry matter Intake is reduced.
