UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) The fruit industry has
always been a part of Robert
Peters’ life. Twenty-five years
ago, he acepted a position as a
technician at the Penn State Fruit
Research Laboratory at Bigler
villc. This year he celebrates a
quarter-century of Penn State
service.
Peters began working in
orchards for M.E. Knouse after
graduating from high school. He
later worked for Penn Dairies for
five years but soon returned to
orchard work. When his career
with Penn State began, the Fruit
Research Lab was located in

Peters has seen numerous
changes in the areas of fruit
research and in the Fruit Research
Laboratory. One of the most not
able changes has been the growth
of the lab itself. In 1971, he moved
with the lab from a small house in
Arcndtsville to its present-day
facilities near Biglerville. Today,
working under Dr. George
Greene, Peters is one of two tech
nicians who work with three part
time workers and a summer crew
of college students.
Peters notes the changes in the
lab’s research. “The main projects
used to involve cork spots on
Yorks,” he remembers.
Peters also has witnessed the

“We used to keep all of our
records using pencils and paper.
Now, when we do counts, we use
hand-held records in the orchards
and the data can be transferred
right into the computer in the lab.”
Peters says the best part about
his job has been its variety. “One
day I am working inside and the
next day outside,” he says. His job
responsibilities are varied and
include keeping all spray apd Held
