The American Jersey Cattle Club
(AJCC) recently announced that
Robert Lord, Woodstock, Vt.,
Manager of, The Billings farm,
will be honored as recipient of the
AJCC Distinguished Service
Award. The award will -be pre
sented to Lord dujjng the organi
zation’s 121st Annual Meeting in
Cedar Rapids, lowa on June 16.
This prestigious award is made
by the Board of Directors to a
member of the Club who has
rendered unselfish service for
many years and thereby made a
notable contribution to the
advancement of the Jersey breed
in the United States.
Bob Lord began his career with
Jerseys in 1942 when he was hired
as herdsman at Dorbrook Farm.
Along with his first job as herds
man at Dorbrook, Lord served as
manager for Harmony Hollow,
Fontenelle, and Tymor Farms, and
he is presently manager of The
Billings Farm in Woodstock, Vl
The Billings Farm is a unique
dairy farm with a museum of agri
culture. The Jerseys at The Bill
ings Farm had a DHIR average in
1988 of 15,669 lbs. milk, 766 lbs.
fat and 586 lbs. protein.
The Billings farm and Bob Lord
were the breeders of Billings Top
Rosanne, the reigning National
Champion.
Lord has served in many capac
ities and on many committees in a
distinguished manner for as long
as he has been involved with
Jerseys. He has been president of
the Connecticut Jersey Cattle
Club, president of the Vermont
Jersey Breeders Association and
president of the New England
Jersey Breeders Association. In
addition to his active participation
in the New England area. Lord has
offered his ideas as a member of
the Board of Directors of the Capi
tol District (N.Y.) Jersey Cattle
Club and the Board of Directors of
The American Jersey Cattle Club.
Lord served two three-year terms
on the AJCC Board of Directors
from 1979 to 1985.
Bob has been one of the biggest
supporters of the All American
activities. He has been instrumen
tal in encouraging participation of
new breeders in the shows and
sales. He has also served as chair
man of the All American Sale

leadership roles with the All
American, he has been a ringman
for the All American Sale, Nation
al Heifer Sale and Pot O’Gold
sales for many years.

ments of quality cattle to the Ver
mont Jersey Breeders Sale, New

Samuel A. Bok, Defiance, Ohio,
will be awarded The American
Jersey Cattle Club’s 1989 Young
Jersey Dairyman Award. Bok is
among seven winners from across
the United States who have
excelled in dairy farming and
Jersey cattle breeding. They have
also been very active in AJCC
programs and Jersey functions,
the winners will be honored at an
awards breakfast June 17 at the
AJCC-NAJ Annual Meeting in

John and Heather Brigham, along
with Brent and Diane Brigham, St.
Albans, Vt., have been awarded
The American Jersey Cattle

man Award. The Brighams are
among seven winners from across
the United States who have

Jersey cattle breeding. They have
also bqen very active in AJCC
programs and Jersey functions.

John and Brent Brigham started
raising calves while finishing col
lege in 1975. After college they
began building a dairy operation.
The Holyoke farmland has been in
their family for many generations.
But, John and Brent had to build
the dairy operation from the
ground up. TTiey built a freestall
bam in 1976 and progressively
added to the operation. In 1982 the

Samuel Bok was given his first
Jersey as a birthday present on his
ninth birthday. Now, at 26, Bok is
one of the Ohio Jersey Breeders
Association’s youngest directors.
Bok currently owns 140 Regis
tered Jerseys, 65 of which are
milking with a rolling herd aver
age of 13,946 lbs. milk, 656 lbs.
fat and 518 lbs. protein. When he
is asked why he milks Jerseys
instead of other breeds he says, “I
tell them that there is more profita
bility, easier handling, and that

Jersey youth as a 4-H Dairy Club
leader with 14 young members
who he encourages to be involved
with the Jersey cow. During his
years of service B.ob has encour
aged many projects to help the
Jersey cause, hosting sales, seject-

COBA/Selcct Sires.
Bok has put AJCC programs to
work at his farm. He is especially
happy with the TPE program and
says he thinks the program will
help him succeed as he continues
to breed to improve productivity,
type and longevity in his herd.
He currently uses those bulls
with the highest PD value for milk
and cheese yield. ‘‘l cannot
and alfalfa hay. A loose grain mix
is used in the parlor through the
computerized feeders.
The Brighams have used the
TPE program for the past three
years and have invested in Equity
for the past five years. John has
been active in efforts to improve
their protein premium received
from the St. Albans Cooperative
Creamery and to form a Franklin
County Association.

for the last two years through the
PGA program at COBA/Select
Sires. Bok believes, “As more
breeders begin to use young sires
the reliability of the proofs will be
more accurate.”
Bok regularly invests in Equity
to help promote a stronger market
for Jersey milk. According to Bok
in his home town of Defiance,
high protein breeds are “few and
far between” and marketing of
milk is one of his biggest con
cerns. He says, “Equity has been
there to open new markets for high
protein milk.”
Bok has supported Jersey sales
with top consignments in the Ohio
Jersey Breeders Spring and Fall
Sales where a couple of times he
has had the second-high priced
animals. He also consigned to the
1987 Jersey Protein Sale.
Samuel and his wife Julie have
two children, Wendy Marie. 3,
and Andy, seven months old.
