The best storage system for high moisture cob com is a
poured concrete SOLLENBERGER SILO, with bottom
unloading. Hie feed can be safely stored at less than 30%
moisture, air is effectively excluded limiting mold growth,
the silo is equipped with a distributor to keep separation to a
minimum which means more efficient unloading and consis

HIGH MOISTURE EAR CORN
Farmers who use ground shelled com rather than ground ear com
when putting up high moisture com (HMC) are not only leaving the cob
in (he field, but they are leaving at least $l5O. worth of milk per acre of
com in the field.
These remarks were made by Dr Howard Larson, noted Mid-
Western dairy nutritionist and management specialist
Further comments based upon years of research included
* Any amount of cob is better than none
* It is not economically feasible nor best for the cow to feed high
moisture shelled com.
* It is not necessary to feed hay to dairy cows.
When cob is included with the gnan, you not only get an extra 10 to
12 percent HMC by weight, but you get better digestibility in your
cows. By adding the cob to the ration, you keep a floor of fiber under the
total ration and fiber can supply a lot of energy; and you gel better
rumen action.
