Wolff Asks Township
Officials To Aid
, Farmers
HERSHEY (Dauphin) State
Agriculture Secretary Boyd E.
Wolff today asked township offi
cials not to burden farmers with
ordinances and zoning that inter
fere with agriculture.
“I ask that you appreciate agri
culture’s contributions to your
economy and its employment pos
sibilities,” said Wolff. “Farmland
maintains open space for all the
residents, including hunters and
tourists. Farmland also recharges
ground water and reduces rain
runoff and flooding.
“I ask that you remember and
consider these factors and do not
pass ordinances or zoning that
unduly restrict or curtail farming
in your township.”
Wolff also urged the Pennsyl
vania State Association of Town
ship Supervisors to preserve farm
land with Act 149, which author
ized slate and county purchases of
agricultural conservation ease
ments.
“We have a real opportunity to
energize public support for agri
culture,” said Wolff. “Every rural
policy agenda should promote
farmland protection through Act
149.”
In a speech to the 67th Annual
State Convention of the Pennsyl
vania State Association of Town
ship Supervisors in Hershey,
Wolff also called for support of
the tax reform referendum.
