UNIVERSITY PARK (Center) —The Penn State chapter of Gam ma Sigma Delta, the nation honor society in agriculture, initiated new faculty and students and hon ored Penn State faculty and alumni at its annual awards banquet this month. Alumni Paul E. Hand, general manager of Atlantic Dairy Cooperative: Samuel F. Minor, a southwestern Pennsylvania dairy farmer; Lloyd E. Thomas, head of engineering staff for USDA’s Soil Conservation Service, Northeast Technical Center; and Boyd E. Hand of Warminister joined Interstate (now Atlantic) Dairy Cooperative as an economist in 1957 and was selected as gener al manager in 1982. The coopera tive is composed of 4,100 dairy farmers who produce 3.5 billion pounds of milk annually. Hand is active in community affairs and local, state, and national agricul tural organizations. He received a B.S and M.S. degree in agricultur al economics and farm manage ment from the University of Maine and earned his doctorate in agricul tural economics at Penn State in 1960. Samuel F. He has served as a member of the Board of Direc tors of Agway and past president of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, and in other leader ship positions with a number of agricultural organizations. He was state conserva tion engineer for New York from 1977 to 1979. In 1983, Lloyd was selected for his present position, which includes managing all engi neering activities in the 13 North eastern states. He is a 1961 Penn State graduate in agricultural engineering. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agri culture Boyd Wolff is from New Alexandria. The successful opera tion of his 410-acre family farm in Westmoreland County earned him a Pennsylvania Master Farmer award in 1970. He was named a loppy manure. He has served as state director of the Pennsylvania Far mers Association and as a member of the Penn State board of trustees. In addition, Wolff has held many other leadership posts in commun ity, state, and political organiza tions. In 1988 he was selected as the Dairy Area Distinguished Alumnus by Penn State’s depart ment of dairy and animals science. He is a 1953 graduate of Penn State in dairy husbandry. Faculty achievement awards were given to Alvi O. Voigt, pro fessor of agricultural economics; Dr. Ralph O. Mumma, professor of entomology; and Dr. Jill Findeis, associate professor of agricultural economics. They were honored for their contributions to extension, research, and teaching, respectively. The College of Agriculture faculty initiated into the honor soc iety this year were Dr. Barbara J. Christ, assistant professor of plant pathology Dr. Herschel A. Elliott, associate professor of agricultural engineering and program coordi nator of environmental resource management; Dr. Gary I. Killian, associate professor of aniimal scinece; Dr. Ralph O. Mumma, professor of entomology; Dr. Kim C. Steiner, professor of forest genetics; Dr. C. Shannon Stokes, professor of rural sociology and head of the department of agricul tural economics and rural sociolo gy; Dr. James E. Van Horn, associ ate professor of rural sociology; and Dr. Stephen J. Wallner, pro fessor of horticulture and head of the department of horticulture. The honor society also pre sented awards to undergraduates in recognition of their scholastic achievement. Donald C. Schrom, a major in food science, received the outstanding senior award; Dorothy M. Krupa, a major in wildlife and fisheries science, received the out standing junior award; and John Carr, a sophomore in forest sci ence, received the outstanding sophomore award.
