Mussleman said his layers were better fed and housed now than when he first started farming. “We have less mortality and higher pro duction now.” Mussleman said. Weaver said he really enjoys seeing his animals healthy and comfortable. He considers his ani mals a “responsiblity” and does his best to feed and care for them. She said their organization, which is char tered by the State, is only inter ested in violations of state law. “We often need to take the side of the farmer when dealing with urban people who know nothing about animal husbandry,” Mauger said. Bill McCoy, president, Lancas ter Stockyards, said the livestock marketing industry is often caught in the middle. The need to accept the animals as they come off the truck puts a burden on the humane care of down or sick animals when you have all the other animals that go through the facility. He expressed the desire to find the problem areas and do what was possible to remedy them.
