Research experts estimate that 15 to 35 percent of all dairy herds in the nation have one or more ani mals infected with Johne’s. It can infect all ruminants. Ingestion of contaminated fecal matter by young animals spreads the disease. In its subclinical stages animals may show signs of decreased fer tility and production. Clinical signs are severe weight loss, chronic diarrhea, excessive thirst and low production. Clinical signs become apparent after freshening when the animal is under stress.
