Bred-Gilt Sale Grosses $64,000 Plus HARRISBURG Building and improving herds was on every one’s minds at the traditional two day Farm Show bred-gilt sale. For Merlin Waltz Farms of Williams port, improvement came at the cost of $1,175 for the grand champion Duroc. The February gilt was con signed by Stoney Ridge Farm owned by the Tom Frantz family. A total of 33 Durocs were sold bringing $11,210 or an average of $340 each. More than $64,000 was spent in the small arena during the sale. An average price of $332 was paid for the 194 animals that crossed the auction block. Just prior to the Yorkshire sale, Leon L. Arnold of Lebanon was presented with the Swine Breeders Award by Farm Show Commis sioner Dennis L. Grumbine, also a Lebanon County hog producer. Arnold, who exhibited the grand champion Yorkshire, was recog nized for his contribution to the hog industry. He was selected for the annual award by the organizers of the bred-gilt show and sale, who also sponsored the award. Arnold received $675 for his champion, which was purchased by Cooper Charolai Farm of Maine. The 39 Yorkshires grossed $13,090. Eugene Smith of Mount Bethel spent $4lO for the grand champion Chester White, which was con signed by James T. Parlett and Sons of Airville. The Chester Whites grossed $5,560 or an aver age of $265. John Mummert of Seven Val leys in York County consigned the grand champion Landrace gilt a February hog. It was purchased by Dave Koms of Hydman for $425. A total of 23 Landrace gilts were sold for $6,765. The grand champion Spotted Swine, consigned by James T. Par lett of York County, went for $560 to Brian Lake of Big Cove Tan nery. The 21 Spotted Swine sold for $6,900. The sale provides hog breeders with an excellent opportunity to purchase champion animals with which to build and improve their herds.
