ACRES CORN UPDATE:
Com futures prices closed lower
from 1/2 to 2-3/4 cents this after
noon in response to spillover from
beans and wheat. Heavy commer
cial led long liquidation pressured
the spot option with some posi
tioning also featured in advance of
Friday’s USDA reports. Estimates
today projected com production
fractionally higher at 4.675 billion
bushels, up from 4.671 projected
in November, but well below
1987’s figure of 7.064 billion.
March ended today’s session at
$2.86-3/4 after briefly touching a
high of $2.89-3/4 early in the ses
sion. Generic certificate bids
firmed with some buyers offering
face value.

UPDATE: Soybean futures
settled lower again today pres
sured by a late fund sell-off and
continued long liquidation. Press
sure continues from improved
South American weather condi
tions and ideas that recent gains
were overdone. Shortly after mid
day pressure was exerted by a
break m oil. Some profit-taking
was featured in advance of Fri
day’s barage of reports which will
include the final crop production,
-quarterly grain slocks and supply
and demand figures. Pre-report
estimates arc calling for a slight
increase in production at 1.524, up
from 1.512 in November. Ending
slocks were estimated at 1.393 bil
lion bushels vs. 1.755 billion last
year. January ended today’s ses
sion 5 cents lower at $7.97-1/2

ACRES WHEAT UPDATE:
Wheat futures closed from 2-1/4
to 3-1/4 cents lower today on a
combination of bearishly con
strued factors. The absence of a
bid this week from the USSR
coupled with heavy long liquida
tion pressured. Spillover from
weaker soybeans added to the sell
ing with losses magnified by the
absence of ready buyers. Some
positioning was featured in
advance of Friday’s crop reports
which arc expected to show a
sharp increase in winter wheat
plantings with acreage pegged at
53.141 million, up from 48.6 mil
lion last year. This increase is due
