    Girven Wins IFYE Award
HARRISBURG—AIice
Girven, Muncy (Lycoming)
received the highest honor for her
work with the International 4-H
Foreign Youth Exchange. As her
recognition from the national orga
nization, Girven received a plaque
during the IFYE meeting here at
the Farm Show.
In making the presentation, Gail
Crooke, state vice president and
chairman of the state selection
committee, said Girven was
selected on the national level for
her work as a volunteer along with
her family because over the years
they became involved in promot

the IFYE program.
Girven said her family received
more than they gave to the prog
ram. “We learned how people in
the other half of the world live,”
Girven said. “And we found that
even though people may speak dif
ferent languages and have diffe
rent cultures, they are still people
and they can still live under one
roof.”
The Girven family hosted their
first 4-H Exchangee from the
Island of Jersey in 1979. This visit
started a friendship that continues
today. Since then visitors from the

Netherlands, Columbia and Japan
have stayed in the Girven home.
And the Girven family members
have visited abroad too.
“Our children still remember
our first visitor,” Girven said. “All
our visits and visitors have been
quite an educuation for our
family.”
Girven was a 4-H member for
nine years and has been a 4-H lead
er for 24 years. She has held
numerous county, regional and
state offices including at present;
key leader, international program,
secretary of the State IFYE task
force, president, regional 4-H
committee and president of the
county 4-H advisory committee.
In addition, Girven is treasurer
of the Auxiliary of the Muncy
Creek Volunteer Fire Company
and is captain and treasurer of the
fire company’s ambulance service.
She has been active in numerous
offices for the elementary and high
school parent/teacher organiza
tions and is an active member of
Messiah Lutheran Church, its
ladies aid society and church choir.
Girven and her husband, Jim,
have three children: Greg, 18,
Krissy, 14, and Creig, 10.
