to reflect the USDA’s reduction in
set-aside requirements from
27.5% to 10% of base acres along
with increased planting in
response to higher prices and
program flexibility. This year pro
ducers will have until April 14 to
comply with program require
ments with many producers plant
ing their entire acreage base.
ACRES CATTLE UPDATE:
Live and feeder cattle futures
ended today’s session lower on
selling throughout the day linked
to long liquidation. Reports of
slow fed trading earlier in the day
pressured the opening with
increased packer activity propping
prices midday. Ideas that packers
will begin to rely on large num
bers of contract cattle for slaugh
ter needs the last half of this
month offset support from active
fed trading at higher prices. Some
pressure was linked to spillover
from the pork complex and selling
on ideas the market had become
overbought. Feeders ended
today’s session from 20 points
higher on the September to 35
points lower on the January
option.

ACRES HOG UPDATE: Live
hog futures settled lower this
afternoon with the February
option leading declines. Selling
was in response to weak cash fun
damentals with many packers
refraining from bidding because
of unprofitable margins. Short
covering late in the session
boosted prices off session lows
with further support linked to
winter storm conditions in parts of
the midwest. Bellies eased lower
today but closed off session lows
mi late short-covering. February
live hogs closed 75 points lower at
$45.42 after touching $45.25 ear
lier in the day.
