takes a few minutes. Pour over a panful of coal, ashes or

Combine ingredients. Add enough warm water to
make a thin paste. Spread over twigs, coarse sand,
gravel and similar objects that have been arranged in a
flat dish or tray. Set where it won’t be moved and watch a
snow-like appearance come to life.
Crystal Chemical Garden
Take chunks of broken brick, coal, porous rocks (not
shiny ones) or sponge. The sponge can be cut into
shapes tike Christmas trees. Soak pieces in water until
thoroughly wet, wring sponge out. Place in a shallow
glass bowl (do not use metal of any kind). In a glass jar
mix 4 tablespoons water, 4 tablespoons liquid blueing
and 4 tablespoons ammonia. Pour over chunks, dam
pen them all. Put a few drops of food coloring on rocks,
one or several colors can be used. Sprinkle 4 tables
poons of salt over entire area. Within a few hours flakes
will begin to form. In less than 6 hours the garden will be
well formed. After 2 days, add 2 tablespoons water and
2 tablespoons ammonia. Pour it into the side of the bowl,
not on the crystals. When it reaches the size you want,
stop adding liquid. If it all falls apart, just add the original
ingredients to the same bowl.
Caution: Do Not let crystals grow beyond the bowl as
they will damage furniture, especially marble and metal.
Do not substitute any ingredient.

ANSWER Dorothy M. Knaub of Red Lion writes
that the red food coloring in the Red Velvet Cake can be
substituted with water. She writes that it makes a light
colored chocolate cake, but tastes good.
