Rohrer, Hollinger Repeat

Rohrer’s binder-class entry
grabbed the judges’ eyes immedi
ately. “The grand champion hand
really stood out,” said Jay Frey,
vice president of Lancaster Leaf
Tobacco Co. “The texture was
very smooth and silky.”
Geoffrey Ranck, president of
Domestic Tobacco Co., added
“The tobacco here was beautiful.
They (farmers) try to make it more
difficult to judge each year.
Rohrer used Nissley tobacco
seed to plant nine acres. ‘This was
one of the better crops that I’ve had
in several years. We got rain at the
right time,” he said. “We were set

for moisture when the rains came,
and the tobacco grew beautifully.
It cured beautifully too. It cured
with a nice color, the color the
judges look for.”
This year’s win makes the
seventh championship for Rohrer
in 12 years. Last year’s winning
entries went on to sweep the
Pennsylvania-type division at
Farm Show.
Hollinger, the son of Robert and
Joyce Hollinger, Submitted several
hands of tobacco from a 1-acre plot
that was a project for the Garden
Spot FFA chapter at Lampeter-
Strasburg High School. It was his
wrapper entry that impressed the
judges. This is Hollinger’s third
year of competition.
