Agway Energy Products Introduces Leaded-Gasoline Replacement SYRACUSE, N.Y. Major refiners are now starting to elimi nate leaded regular gasoline from their product lines due to limited consumer demand. These actions are leaving many Northeast farm ers without an adequate fuel to run their older equipment. To meet the needs of this market Agway Ener gy Products is introducing Power- Shield Plus TM, an 89-octane Avoid Fertilizer Burn Of Seed DeKALB, IL. ‘Two conse cutive years of dry top soils have intensified the effects of improper fertilizer placement within the seed zone,” said a seed company agronomist. “The result is fertiliz er salt injury causing the death of germinating seed, poor early root development, severe stand reduc tions and significant yield losses,” stated Rick of Dekalb- Pfizer Genetics. “Injury is due to nitrogen, phos phorus and potassium fertilizers, with ‘high salt indexes’ being placed too near the seed or young plant root systems.” Mason explained. “Soil moisture moves from zones of low to high salt con centration. When the salt concent ration inside the seed or root is lower than “salty” soil around it, the seed is prevented from germi nating; or the young com plant wilts and dies from the lack of ability to take up moisture.” “Salt damage is more likely to occur when a dry period follows spring plantings having normal moisture,” according to the seed company specialist. “Moisture evaporating within the seed or root zone leaves a highly concen trated salt solution near growing plant tissue.” Mason advises the best way of avoiding the sale injury risk is proper fertilizer placement at planting. Adjust equipment so placement averages 2 inches to the side and 2 inches below the seed or seedling. Farmers should also apply anhydrous ammonia, high or low ammonia pressure nitrogen solutions, diammonium phosphate and urea at least one week before planting to avoid seedling damage.
