ST. JOSEPH, Mich. John
Deere Tractors and Equipment,
1837-1959, the first in a proposed
two-volume set, was released by
the publisher, the American Soci
ety of Agricultural Engineers, in
September 1988, the Society
announced today. The book is the
eighth in a series published by the
Society that focuses on the history
of agricultural equipment.
In the first part of this 400-page,
hardbound volume, author Don
Macmillan goes beyond existing
Deere studies, chronicling com
pany history as it relates to pro
duct line expansion and develop
ment, from the time of the plow to
Deere’s first diesel. As Boyd Bart
lett, former Deere & Company
president, points out in the book’s
preface, “some of this expansion
was by invention, some by adapta
tion or modification and much by
acquisition”. Whatever the route,
however, during the 122-year
span covered in the book, “farm
equipment underwent more
change than in the previous his
tory of mankind”, and by 1959,
“the John Deere product line had
become one of the most diverse
and best known in the industry”.
A product review makes up the
second part of the book and
includes a large number of previ
ously unpublished pictures, as
well as details on almost every
tractor, every implement Deere &
Company produced in the period.
