record of 18.521 lbs. of milk and
819 lbs. of butterfat. Second was
“Joyce 2,” with the record of
19,894 lbs. of milk and 809 lbs. of
butterfat.
-The purebred dairy herd of
Masonic Homes Farms, Elizabeth
town, PA, has recently completed
its 32nd year of Ayrshire Herd
Testing with 105 cows making an
average of 9,592 pounds of milk
and 412 pounds of butterfat on
twice-a-day milking, actual
production.
-The Lancaster County 4-H
tobacco and com round-up will be

To Market Hogs
At Lighter Weight
DES MOINES, lA. What
weight to market hogs? It’s a
question that has been popping up
lately as prices are under great
pressure.
University of Missouri Ag Eco
nomist Glenn Grimes says that
barrow and gilt weights at the
seven major markets show a
record weight increase of one per
cent over a year ago. For example,
the estimated weight increase of
barrows and gilts for the month of
November was 254.5 pounds. Last
year the average November
weight was 253 pounds.
According to Grimes there are a
number of disadvantages to sell
ing hogs at heavier weights. Feed
efficiency becomes slightly less
when producers allow their hogs
to reach the 230 pound area. It
lakes more pounds of feed to put
on a pound of gain. Depending on
the type of hog, some may have to
go above the 250 pound range
before inefficiencies of significant
magnitude occur, but some hogs
become inefficient just above the
200 pound area.

wein as product manager for

their corporate headquarters in
Coldwater, Ohio. Gutwein is also
responsible for compact tractor
implements and White loaders.
Previously, Gutwein has held
the position as Market Analyst for
White-New Idea. He joined White
Farm Equipment in 1985.
Gutwein holds a Bachelor of
Science Degree in .Agriculture

servation District completed 1958
with a total of 1,702 conservation
cooperators, an increase 6f 98 for
1957. The 98 district-cooperator
agreements signed during ’5B
brought 7,081 more acres of coun
ty crop land under SCD practices.

cooperators’ farm. East Earl
Township, led the local area para
de for the year.

Better Off
Grimes, who also is a market
consultant for the National Pork
Producers Council, added that
some of today’s 250 pound hogs
may have the breeding in them to
be fed to that weight and retain
good quality, however most of
them will be too fat at that point
Generally, hogs that weigh over
250 pounds are too fat to provide
the lean pork the industry needs to
continue producing if the consum
er demand which has developed
during the last couple of years is to
continue.
Grimes said, if producers take
ten pounds off the weight of their
250 pound hogs, under present
market conditions it could add
anywhere between three and four
dollars per hundred weight to the
average price that producers
would get. At the same time it
would improve the quality of the
product. Grimes said that lower
ing market hog weights will adjust
the present supply so that is more
in line with consumer demand.
That should also improve the price
producers get for their hogs.

Specially designed shaft to power hydraulic pumps, etc
This unit is basically designed to transmit power from engine to power take off shaft
equipment. The reason for this design, an extra shaft is built into this unit so power can
be transmitted to the hydraulic system by using belts and pulleys. This shaft is placed
above the splined shaft, and runs hydraulic pump with or without power take off shaft in
gear. No need to take the rope rewind starter off to mount pulley on front of the engine.
This simple design eliminates special machined pulley adaptors. Reduction housing and
cover is a rugged cast iron construction. All shafts are of special selected steels and are
heat treated and hardened at wear points. All ball and needle bearing construction for
long life. A heavy-duty ball-loc type clutch is used. This unit has few moving parts, thus
it should give many years of service. Clutch adjustments are made from the outside, (very
simple).
A specially selected engine, the Kawasaki KF-82 BV2 HP, is used for your convenience.
The engine is also made with rugged construction, and has smooth operation. This engine
has high torque at low RPMs, thus is well adapted to the clutch and reduction unit.
