Sediments and nutrients from surface run-off are prime polluters of the Chesapeake Bay. Corinnc Curran, a senior major ing in environmental resource management, is working with Dr. James D. Pratt, assistant professor of aquatic biology. Using a bio monitoring testing method, she is collecting data on the toxicity levels of effluents released by per mitted dischargers into the Sus quehanna River basin. Typically, Pennsylvania uses chemical stan dards to regulate sewage effluent dischargers. These chemical stan dards normally do not include levels of organic toxins that may harm the receiving stream’s aqua tic life. He is assessing biological changes in the aquatic environment of the receiving stream, both upstream and downstream of the sewage treatment plant. The project will determine if current total phos phorus standards arc stringent enough to protect the aquatic spe cies of the receiving stream.
