NEWARK. DE “Radon has
become a public issue over the last
several years,” says Debbie Ams
den, University of Delaware
Extension home economist. “Con
cern over radon as an indoor air
pollutant is due to its link, to lung
cancer.”
Radon gas is formed when
underground uranium deterior
ates. Buildings can trap the gas as
it moves from the soil into the
atmosphere. Radon is less than the
gas pressure in the surrounding
soil.
The Environmental Protection
Agency recommends that a read
ing of more than 4 picocuries per
liter (pCi/L) indicates a need for
corrective action.
Radon testing kits can be pur
chased from drug stores and medi
cal laboratories. But Amsdcn cau
tions consumers to be sure the kit
is labeled as meeting EPA’s
approval. The two basic types of
kits, costing $lO and up, are Char
coal Canister and Alpha- Track
detectors. Amsdcn says carefully
following instructions will yield
accurate results.
The Division of Public Health,
environmental health bureau,
charges $5 to lest homes for
radon. To get on their waiting list
call 800-554-4636.
Private contractors also test for
radon and charge between $25 and
$lOO.

equipment and techniques,” says
Amsdcn. “Because of the limited
amount of information about
radon, unscrupulous people may
lake advantage of consumr fears.
If you have a high reading with an
initial test, do a second test before
investing in cosily renovations.”
Amsdcn says reducing radon in
your home can be accomplished
by either preventing its entry or by
replacing contaminated indoor air
by ventilation. Methods range
from simple to complex, and some
may be much more expensive than
others. For more information on
radon reduction techniques, con
