Delaware Valley College has bro
ken ground for its new, state-of
the-art Dairy Science Center to be
located within the agricultural
complex off Almshouse Road in
New Britain Township. The Cen
ter will replace the existing dairy,
built in 1925 and recently sold,
with a modem facility to house the
College’s dairy herd and to incor
porate embryo transfer and related
biotechnological sciences.
The ceremonial groundbreak
ing took place at Homecoming on
Oct. 1, 1988. Phase I of the con
struction will include the build
ing’s shell and completion of
housing for 50 milk cows and 50
young stock, milkroom, silos, feed
mixing center, milking parlor and
superintendent’s office.
The College expects to relocate
its herd in mid-February from the
old facility just off Route 202 to
the new Center.
The total three-year cost of con
structing and equipping the new
Dairy Science Center is
$1,100.00. The College’s Board
of Trustees has already allocated
$600,000 toward the initial phase.
Phase II will utilize the remain
der of the I-shaped building shell,
completing the interior for the
highly-complex and technical
embryo transfer center, milk pro
cessing room, student office/
records room and locker room
facilities.

Delaware Valley College Starts New Dairy Science Center

dairy industry, such as estrus syn
chronization and the marketing of
embryos. The College anticipates
that the entire facility will attract
increased outside research pro
jects, as well.
Said Dr. John Plummemr,
Associate Dean for Agriculture
and chairman of the Dairy Science
Department, “I feel strongly the
importance of this project. We are
building a state-of-the-art facility
that will be instrumental in mov
ing the dairy program at DclVal
into the next century. At the same
time, we are maintaining our place
in educational and dairy industry
fields.
“The dairy science program at
Del Val has a strong science base,
while emphasizing application of
knowledge. We have more high
quality and diverse jobs available
than we have graduates to fill
them.”
