A3o*LmcMt«r Farming, Saturday, October 29, 1988 DeFOREST, WI. Building a strong reputation for helping others is not an easy feat. But Paul Bauder, Jersey Shore, PA used hard work, reliability and sound advice to consistently attain this feat which has helped him reach a milestone in his career as *an American Breeders Service (ABS) Genetic Mating Service (GMS) evaluator...over 100,000 lifetime GMS evaluations. In fact, Bauder has evaluated over 120,000 cows and has in mind a goal of 200,000 evaluations. Bauder recently reached his milestone of 100,000 evaluations after working as an evaluator since August 29, 1979. Being one of the top 10 evaluators in the country each year for total cow numbers, Bauder was also awarded ABS Region 040 Evalua tor of the Year for 1987. During 1983, he was recognized when he evaluated ABS’s 3 millionth cow. One reason for his success is his willingness to do the best he can in quantity and quality that means working hard, being reliable and “slicking to it.” WHTTRWASHWt* with W JEJLJm Mt JCw ff mfmmtSr'MbMt Jw w w W A |*|l ADVANTAGE FARM WHITE • DRIES WHITE • NO WET FLOORS • IS COMPATIBLE WITH DISINFECTANT AND FLY SPRAYS • DOES NOT RUB OFF EASILY • WASHES OFF WINDOWS & PIPELINES EASILY BARN CLEANING SERVICE AVAILABLE WITH COMPRESSED AIR To have your bam cleaned w iih air it will clean off dust, cob webs & lets of die old lime This will keep youi bam looking cleaner &. whiter longer. CALL v 800-338-5094 , Bauder Reaches Milestone Bauder’s interest in dairy cattle began when he was 17 years old and involved in the Future Far mers of America. At that lime Bauder’s family lived in town. In 1953, they moved to the farm and purchased five cows from a far mer who sold out. They felt fortu nate to start with a herd of that size because at that time 16-18 cow herds were considered large. By 1976, Bauder had his own family (a wife and five children), 60 head of dairy cattle on the farm includ ing 33 cows, and was ready to start milking the first cows from GMS evaluations made a couple of years earlier. Unfortunately, they had some setbacks such as when their bam burned in Decem ber 1976, leaving only heifers. After selling the remaining heifers as they freshened, the Bauder fam ily began raising a herd of 30 Sim mental beef cattle. Bauder’s interest in working for ABS began in March 1979 when his sales representative visited him about the idea. After traveling with an evaluator in the area, attending breeding school and (With Steel Trusses) Price $14,849.54 $7,705.60 $35,913.73 $26,244.50 $27,480.60 doing some relief work. Bander attended GMS school in August 1979 and began working at his present position as GMS evaluator later that month. After starting at a slow pace (950 cows his first four months) Bauder was gradually given more territory to work as he learned more about the business. Since that time, he has averaged around 15,000 evaluations per year and is setting goals of 17,000 per year. Traveling is a big part of Baud er’s business. The territory which he covers has grown to 25 coun ties, all but one are in Pennsylva nia, over the past years. He works with 12 sales representatives, eva luates about 285 herds, and travels approximately 35,000 miles each year. Bauder explains, “It would be extremely difficult to get new customers without the help of the sales representatives or without seeing or being seen by others.” Most of Bauder’s customers are repeat customers - and for good _ # , reason. According to District Irrigation IVlCCtlllfi Sales Manager Bill Flick, Baud- ® er’s immediate supervisor, “Baud- The 1988 Delaware Extension Irrigation Conference will be held Tuesday, November 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Delaware Technical and Community Col lege auditorium on RL 18 east of Georgetown. He wants to leave the farm a better place because he’s been there.” Bauder will evaluate a cow or heifer in her “work clothes” in an impartial manner not knowing the sire until after the evaluation is made. He feels this is the key to the prog ram’s success. Bauder also keeps up to date on new information and ideas by attending meetings and work shops and reading several farm journals. But most of all, Bauder, with all the knowledge he’s gained, pays attention to detail. He works with dairy managers to stress the importance of good management, including heifer management in reaching their goals. “One of the main reasons for Paul’s success is his extensive knowledge about the GMS pro gram and the entire industry. Someone who has evaluated that ABS many dairy animals and talked with as many dairy producers as is an invaluable resource for his GMS customers,” shares Donna Luecke. Manager GMS Field Operations. The satisfaction of doing a quality job is what Paul Bauder strives for. Over the years, Bauder has seen marked improvements in the herds he has worked with - especially in udders, center sup port, and feet and legs - as a result of the GMS program and improved management. After evaluating over 100,000 heifers and cows, Bauder feels “old” after accomplishing so much but has his goal set at 200,000 evaluations. Bauder has a sincere love for the bovine and in helping others - and it shows in his work. “Evaluating cows is just like dairying; you have to like it or it will drive you crazy.” For Baud er, “It’s the next best thing to dairying.” Set For November national origin.
