For rural kids sum mers are spent baling hay, attend ing 4-H activities, and working on the family farm. As fall rolls around and summer comes to an end both urban and rural lifestyles unite in school. For many, football games become a reality, but for others the county fair and its competitions the culmi nation of the summer. What began as a cool September morning soon turned into a warm fall day for the 4-H dairy exhibi tors at the Frederick County Fair grounds in Frederick, Md. Type judges for the day included Holstein judge David Hill, Jersey, Ayrshire, and Milking Shorthorn judge Wayne Spurrier, and Michael Allen judging the Brown Swiss and Guernsey show. In the Holstein competition Gaylene Smith captured both of the top titles. Standing in the champion position was OCS Dairy Val Phil Patty - Z, a 3-year-old daughter of OCS Dairy Elevation Valiant Phil. Bayville Starbuck Star - ET, a senior yearling daught er of Hanover Hill Starbuck, was the recipient of the junior champ ion and reserve grand champion title. Gaylene’s 3-year-old was also named the supreme champion of the show. Rebeccah Os bom captured the grand champion Jersey tide with her 4-year-old Boss Man daughter. Jack Kohler was able to represent the junior champion with senior yearling Gaywinds Captain Cristen. A brother and sister team repre sented the Ayrshire breed. Seth Burner led his aged cow to the champion circle and Hope Burner was at the halter of the summer yearling that captured the junior championship The Kline family consisting of Gregory and Rodney stood in the champion and junior champion places respectively, with their senior 2-year-old and senior heifer calf in the Milking Shorthorn competition. Seth Burner in the Ayrshire competition was able to capture the lop position in the Brown Swiss show with 4-ycar-old KEB Clay View P. Magic Pam and Jen nifer Keilholtz stood at the top of the junior show with her senior calf a Blessings Titian Norcen daughter. Clay Smith was the dominating exhibitor in the Guernsey breed holding the top two animals. In the fitting and showing com petition there were 11 first year fit ters and showmen which all show in a class of their own. All other fit ters and showmanship skills are judged by individual breeds. In a culminating show each winner shows against the others in order to choose a champion showman. The individual breed winners were: Guernsey Clay Smith, Jen nifer Keilholtz; Brown Swiss winner Rebcc cah Osbom; Jersey Raymond Long; Ayrshire Rodney Kline; Milking Shorthorn Gregory Kline Holstein Crystal Smith.
