WE DON'T GUESS ABOUT SILAGE HYBRIDS AT DOEBLER'S WE TEST THEM By Bill Camerer I’m Bill Camarer, Doeblar research di rector. This computer and electronic scales automatically weigh silage in truck at right. You might have more protein than usual in your com silage this year. That’s what we found in our silage trials this fall. Normal range for crude protein in corn silage is 7.2% to 9.1%. Yet half the hybrids in one Central Pennsylvania farm trial this fall tested higher, with Doebler 86XA scoring a lofty 11.1% crude protein. Doebler’s established trials this year on 31 farms in five Eastern states. A sort of hybrid Olympics. While the top hybrids often changed with locations the pattern on crude protein pretty much held up. Why the higher numbers? The drought, for one thing. As silage tonnage went down, crude protein per ton generally went up. In that Central Pennsylvania trial, for instance, Doebler 70XC produced the most silage per acre but two hybrids had more protein per acre, i Doebler began silage testing jast year to spot the big TDN and protein producers. This fall we rolled out with a customized Army 6 by 6 truck equipped with a forage box, computer and electronic scales. All silage was weighed automatically and samples wet tested by an independent lab. Drought reduced yield figures. On many farms we harvested only half a normal crop. Here are our silage leaders for droughty 1988: Full Season Doebler 84XP, 118 day newcomer, was the class of the full season hybrids with per acre bests for total tons and total digestible nutrients. Doebler 86XA placed second with strong crude protein showings; 89XC a close third. Late Medium Doebler 75X-MOD, 113 days, was runaway winner among late medium maturity hybrids. It took 19 first or second places in three categories measured tonnage, TDN and CP. Big tons and TDN gave 75X strong second; 70XC placed third with top placings in all categories. Early Medium Doebler 59XA, 96 days, showed its versatility in tests of 90 day hybrids with convincing firsts for tonnage, TDN and crude protein. Doebler 505-3 way a quality second. Doebler 57XP just a step behind in third. Early Doebler 370 A-3 way, 85 days, is a popular early silage and it showed why this fall by beating the other early hybrids in most matchups. Three way tie for second between 46XA and 29X with big tons and TDN, and 28XP with big crude protein tests.
