One night a while ago, when I
collected for “United Way” in my
community, I went back a long
farm lane and found an old couple
with one 25 watt bulb in one room.
The room was full of clocks as I
suppose they collected them. They
were nice people but it was an eerie
place.
Then there is the overgrown
shrubbery. As one gets older it is
harder to keep after everything and
climbing ladders is no fun. Every
spring and in fact all summer long,
I’m outside with my litdeprunning
shears. We have a trumpet vine
that is climbing up the wall of the
kitchen and is intent on covering a
window or two. Three times this
year I’ve cut it back and the same

It appears that younger people

were the winners of the Eastern
States Exposition Intercollegiate
and J unior Livestock contests held
recently in West Springfield,
Mass.
Collegiate and 4-H judging
teams from eight states partici
pated in the contests. Beef cattle,
sheep, and swine were evaluated
and ranked according to their
breeding and carcass merit. Con
testants also presented oral reasons
on selected classes to justify their
placings.

sity livestock judging team coach
ed by Keith Bryant scored 21 more
points than the contestants from

Eastern States Expo
have more energy. A house with
young children is usually bustling
with activities while a house with
only adults is much more quiet.
Maybe that is why I saw two squir
rels on our back porch recently.
One can easily settle into a cer
tain pattern of living and not want
to change. That is probably why
grandparents are glad to see their
grandchildren come and then glad
to see them go.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute to
win the college division. Kirsta
Rankin of Abbottstown, PA, was
the high individual, scoring 826
out of 900 possible points. Other
teams competing were Cableskill,
Delaware Valley College, and
Potomac State.
In the junior contest the 4-H
team from Maryland was the victor
in the beef cattle, sheep and swine
divisions. The Maryland team
scored a total of 114 points more
than its nearest competitor.
Catherine Duffey and Kelly
Clagett, both Maryland 4-H’ers
placed first and second in the indi
vidual competition. 4-H teams
from Connecticut and New Hamp
shire were also in the 1988 Big E
educational program for youth.
