The United States Achievement
Academy announced today that
Larry Dean High has been named a
United States National Collegiate
Award winner in Dairy Science.
This award is a prestigious honor
very few students can ever hope to
attain. In fact, the Academy recog
nizes less than 10% of all Ameri
can college students.
Larry Dean High, who gra
duated from Delaware Valley Col
lege was nominated for this
National Award by Dr. John Plum
ber, a professor at the school. Larry
Dean will appear in the United
States Achievement Academy
Official Collegiate Yearbook,
published nationally.

and belter feed efficiency of the
more concentrated diets more than
offset added treatment costs.
Studies at Ohio, Penn State, and
Michigan have shown 400-500 lb.
calves gained adequately on starter
diets of com silage and soybean
meal. A New Mexico study indi
cated an optimum performance
level by using oat hay for 7 days
free choice with a 75% concentrate
diet fed for 4 weeks. Another
recommended diet is 1% of the
body weight as ground ear com
and free choice access to alfalfa/
bromc hay.
There are mixed results on the
most effective source of protein in
starter diets. An Oklahoma study
found cottonseed meal was not as
readily consumed as soybean
meal, and smaller pellet sizes (3/16
in.) were more effective than lar
ger ones or cube-type forms. Urea
supplements will often result in
decreased gains and feed efficien
cy when added to com silage star
ter diets.
The stressed calf is often dehy
drated to some degree. Studies
with starter diets which included
supplemental potassium or sodium
bicarbonate have indicated the
addition of these minerals will
improve feed intake and daily
gains in the early part of the feed
ing period. Penn State research has
shown the addition of 1% sodium
bicarbonate with and without addi
tional limestone tended to improve
daily gam for the first 28 days on
feed.
Vitamins are also important
nutrients to feeder cattle. Vitamin
A requirements are increased dur
ing stress, and supplemental vita
min A can be added to the diet at
40,000-60,000 I.U. per day.
Because consumption may be
reduced, it may be more effective
to provide additional vitamin A
with an injection of 1 million I.U.
upon arrival. Supplemental B
vitamins have been shown to
reduce the effects of stress and
result in faster initial gains, better
feed efficiency, and reduced
morbidity.
Implanting calves with anabolic
steroids has also been found to
alleviate stress.
Less weight loss in transit and fas
ter recovery from shrink has been
shown for implanted versus non
implantcd calves handled in the
same manner.

George Stevens, Executive Direc
tor of the United States Achieve
ment Academy. The Academy
selects US A A winners upon the
exclusive recommendation of pro
fessors, coaches, counselors or
other school sponsors and upon the
Standards of Selection set forth by
the Academy. The criteria for
selection are a student’s academic
