Dairy Tips By Dr. John Clark
Preparing the milking cow for her next lactation begins dur
ing the last 30 - 90 days of her current lactation. This must be
done to assure sufficient time to replace body reserves used up
in the previous lactation.
The modem dairy cow has an inborn ability to use nutrients
stored in bones and other tissues for milk production over and
above that supported by feed. These nutrients removed from
her body must be replaced, however, if she is to produce an
QUESTION? WHY SHOULD YOU WORM YOUR DAIRY COWS?
ANSWER: YOU CAN’T AFFORD NOT TO!!!!
WHY????
1. Grain Costs -
40 lbs. x 10 months x 9.5#/lb. = $38.00
2. Milk Production -Although the daily milk response
(up to 2 lbs.) is hard to measure, care
fid research has repeatedly shown
500 to 600 pound added per lactation.
500 pounds extra milk x .11 = $55.00/
lactation

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR DRY COWS
A moderate worm load can consume a
GALLON OF BLOOD Per month. It
takes 40 pounds of Dairy feed per
month to replace this. Annual cost
$38.00
Well fed cows will not become un
thrifty because they are so well fed.
However, with high producing cows
why make them endure an additional
stress.

equal or greater amount her next lactation. If they are not
replaced, she will not peak as high and will not rebreed as
efficiently.
The stress put on cows because of recent drought caused by
extremes in temperature and poor feed intake makes it doubly
important to rebuild body condition. This can be done during
the last 30 - 90 days of the lactation cycle and should continue
through the dry cow period to rebuild body stores along with
calf growth.

cow dewormers.
