Atlantic Members Hear Good News On Milk Prices
SOUTHAMPTON (Bucks)
Milk prices could be heading up in
the next few months, with
increases hovering around the $1
mark, according to Robert M.
Dever, assistant general manager
of Atlantic Dairy Cooperative.
“We anticipate, for a number of
reasons, that the price of milk will
head up, probably between $1 to
$1.20 per hundredweight through
the balance of 1988,” he said.
Dever made the announcement
last week to 225 Atlantic members
attending the District 6 annual din
ner meeting in New Holland, Pa.
The gathering was the first in a
series of local and district meetings
the cooperative will sponsor this
fall.
An increased demand for dairy
products coupled with state and
federal legislation and over-order
milk premiums ar ehelping to push
prices higher, Dever said.
Typically, milk prices are high
er during the fall months when
demand is greater. This year is no
exception; however, unusually
strong sales are adding an addi
tional boost.
“Dairy sales and demand for
dairy products are as strong as
they’ve been in a number of
years,” Dever said. “We continue
to see a strengthening in milk
prices.”
Prices over the next 12 months
will probably peak during the

November-February period,
Dever said, adding that the first
quarter of 1989 should be strong.
In addition to the seasonal price
swing, state and federal legislation
played a part in raising milk prices,
Dever said. Notably was the
drought relief legislation, which
blocked a scheduled Jan. 1, 1989,
50-cent per hundredweight cut in
the support price for milk and pro
vided for a temporary support
price increase.
“In April 1989, due to federal
legislation, the support price will
be increased 50 cents per hundred
weight,” Dever told the dairy far
mers. “This will be in effect for
three months.”
On a more immediate level,
dairy farmers will soon see a
change in their milk price.
Through action by Atlantic and
other state farm organizations, the
milk price in Pennsylvania will be
increased by $1.05 per hundred
weight, effective Sept. 1 through
February 28, 1989.
“Atlantic approached the Pen
nsylvania Milk Marketing Board
to increase the Class I milk price,”
Dever said. “We were successful
in getting an increase for dairy
farmers.”
Another successful venture for
Atlantic has been the Middle
Atlantic Cooperative Milk Mark
eting Agency. MACMMA, as it is
known, was formed by Atlantic

and two other Mid-Atlantic
cooperatives to bargain for over
order premiums on Class I milk.
“To date, we were able to collect
$12.5 million in over-order pre
miums,” Dever said of the three
MACMMA cooperatives. “About
$7.2 million went back to AUantic
members.”
