Bruce and Ann are partners on the Schrader family farm just south of Chcstertown, Md., where they have operated since 1971. As a youth in 4-H and FFA, Bruce was outstanding in dairy judging and highlighted his judging experience as a member of Maryland’s State 4-H dairy judg ing team. This group narrowly missed being national champions by a few points at the Columbus contest. The Schraders have three boys, Brian, Brad and Brett. Brian is active in 4-H and participates in judging and showing. The Schrad ers have been very active suppor ters of the 4-H program and the Holstein Club in Queen Anne’s County, hosting bam meetings, picnics, judging practices and fill ing several offices in the local Holstein Club. She also gives the vital back up support to Bruce in areas that need a woman’s touch such as assembling informa tion for meetings and activities that they become involved in. Their approach to their business is very much a team effort. They milk 170 Registered Hols teins and last year’s herd average, DHI, was 19,094 milk, 4.2%, 804 Fat. In 1983, their herd was first in the state for large herds with an average of 20,741 milk, 4.0%, 830 fat This herd has been known for its high butterfat production and has consistently produced at a high level with 4.0% or higher fat. Bruce credits this achievement to a strong background of Pawnee Farm Arlmda Chief blood and close attention to quality forage production. Their farm is cropped intensively with rye for silage fol lowed by double crop com and alfalfa for a hay crop. AUGERS automatic farm systems 608 Evergreen Rd.
