The industry’s move into branded, case-ready packaging requires the strictest quality assurance programs. Animals must carry identification across the kill floor and into fabrication. If a quality-assurance problem occurs at the retail level, the brand will identify who has responsibility; which in turn means a trace has to be made back to the individual ani- Hesston harv give more forage on less fuel. The Animal Health Institute (AHI) also is addressing the food safety issue. In their recent Animal Health Letter, AHI outlined two possible proposals to minimize the drug residue problem. One, which is favored by many veterinarians, would shift more drugs into the veterinary “prescription” categ ory. The other approach is a documentation or certification program where producers would keep records of animal drugs used and report them each time a trans fer of ownership is made. AHI also has prepared proposals for changes in the drug classification system.
