County).”
Last year the number of layers
increased by 291,400 to 9 million
birds whereas the value of their
eggs fell to $85.9 million.
“We’ve seen ups and downs (in
the poultry industry) but n6t a con
tinual down,” Irwin said.
On the brighter side, although
the total number of feeder cattle
and calves decreased by 4,000,
their value increased by $28.3 mil
lion. This reflects a 10-cent per
hundredweight increase in price.
Neither Irwin nor Chet Hughes,
Lancaster County livestock agent,
believe <hat there will be a drama
tic change in the numbers of feeder
cattle in next year’s report despite
the high feed prices resulting from
the drought situation. “There are
still a lot of cattle still in feeder
lots,” said Hughes. “When the
1989 report comes out, then the
figures will be down.” Many cat
tlemen purchased feeder calves
during the latter part of last year
and early in 1988 when prices for
the young stock were low, there
fore the 1988 figures will reflect
this action rather than the drought.
Lancaster County remains the
top beef cattle producer with
265,000 animals. Following the
county are Franklin with 92,000,
Bradford with 90,500, and Berks
with 75,000.
Also tops in hog production,
with 38 percent of the state’s hog
population, Lancaster County far
mers owned 328,000 swine last
year as compared to the 49,700
hogs that York County farmers
owned and the 45,000 owned by
Berks Countians.
In 1987, Lancaster County hog
production dropped slightly more

than four percent and saw a $9.1
million decrease in value.
The number of sheep in the
county has increased by 250 to
6,250 with a corresponding
increase in the value of the ani
mals. Lancaster County still
remains a distant third in sheep
numbers as compared to the
number-one county, Greene with 1
million sheep, and Washington
County with 828,000 sheep.
Lancaster County has 60 per
cent of its crop land in com with a
total of 180,600 acres producing
an average of 103 bushels per acre
in grain and 19.1 tons per acre in
silage last year.
“Some areas had dry weather
last year and that shows up right
here in the com production,” stated
Irwm. Although acres in com for
grain dropped by 15.5 thousand
acres and and yield dropped by 16
bushels per acre last year, the value
only dropped $2.5 million because
price per bushel increased from
$1.83 to $2.15.
Acres in corn for silage
increased by about nine thousand
acres as dairymen strove to fill
their silos first last year.
Soybean acreage increased by
1,300 acres and yield increased
one bushel per acre to 38.0. The
value of soybeans went up 100, by
35.5 percent.
Acres in wheat and barley
decreased in 1987 as did yields.
Slightly more acres were planted
in oats, however, yields decreased
by nine bushels fccr acre from
1986. Farmers planted more acres
in potatoes, tobacco, hay, and veg
etables last year and saw an
increase in value for tobacco and
hay and slight value decreases for
potatoes and vegetables.
