Delaware County 4-H Livestock Sale
MEDIA (Delaware) —Twenty
two hogs and 10 lambs were sold at
auction by 4-H members following
their show at the Delaware County
4-H Fair on Saturday, August 20 in
Rose Tree Park. The champion
market hog shown by -Steve Har
man of Lima sold for $5OO to Cul
bertson Enterprises, Inc. of West
Chester, according to Bud Bryan,
Delaware County 4-H agent The
reserve champion shown by Kerry
Boody of Newtown Square was
purchased by Sampson Travel of
Newtown Square and J.C.B.
Travel of King of Prussia. The
champion market lamb, a Hamp
shire shown by Chris Young of
Clifton Heights, was purchased by
his parents, Mary Beth and Warren

boon to Pennsylvania farmers, the
effects of this summer’s drought
continue. Next week com and soy
bean growers can get up-to-date
information on drought manage
ment practices at Penn State’s
annual Southeastern Field
Research Laboratory Field Day in
Landisville, Wed., Sept. 14 from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Penn State researchers in the
College of Agriculture will be on
hand to discuss a number of
drought related issues such as nit
rogen carryover, com growth
under drought conditions and how
some varieties of soybeans
respond to drought.
Farmers also can get informa
tion on nitrogen tests for com, com
insecticide trials, controlling com
and soybean insects, as well as
information on the interaction of
com tillage, nitrogen and cover
crops. Faculty also will discuss

champion lamb which sold to Bill
Strine of Media. The livestock
judge was Keith Bryan, an animal
science instructor at Penn State
University.
In the showmanship competi
tion, champion senior showman
was Steve Harman and reserve
champion was Matt Trumbull, of
Lima. Champion junior showman
was Barbara Hannig of Broomall
and reserve champion was Kerry
Boody, with Mike Maloney of
Upper Darby winning champion
first year showman and James
Henderson of Springfield getting
reserve champion first year show
man. The lamb senior, junior and
specifics on weed control and the
latest on hybrid testing and
breeding.
The Southeastern Field
Research Laboratory at Landisvil
le is one of three field research
laboratories operated by Penn
State’s College of Agriculture.
The 106-acre research farm in
Lancaster County is suited ideally
to studies of intensive crop produc
tion. In addition to com and soy
bean research, current projects
include small grain research, weed
control and management practices
to control forage diseases and
insects.
The field laboratory is located
on Auction Road, two miles north
west of Landisville. The Com and
Soybean Field Day on Wed., Sept.
14 is free and open to the public
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will
be available from the Society of
Farm Women #5. For more infor

Dairy Goat champions were

were named champion and reserve
in the dairy calf judging. Barbara
Watson of West Chester judged
the goats and Nancy Botella, Dela
ware County 4-H Agent officiated
the dairy calf judging.
