The 4-H members showed 63 head, which averaged $92.84 with the champions and $85.36 without the champions. Hatfield Quality Meats purchased 14 head and Gwaltney of Smithfield, Va., bought six head. Other buyers were Evergreen Tractor, McClarin Plastics, Glen Rock State Bank, exhibited by Jason Frantz. Jerry Clemens, buyer for Hat field Quality Meats, purchased the runnerup champion at $1.50. Correspondent BEDFORD A 1.242-pound black steer fed since last October by Ty Jay, 17, of Artemas emerged as grand champion in a 66-head steer show at the 115th Bedford County Fair here. Judge John Comerford, Exten sion beef specialist at Penn State, pointing to the Everett Area Future Farmer of America’s entry, said it was “a real combination steer with good dimension,” adding that “he handles real well with a lot of natural thickness.” The calf also was chosen heavyweight champion. Jim Fisher of Bedford marched his black heavy, weight, at 1,199 pounds, to the reserve champion heavyweight position. At the sale auctioneered by Clayton Winebark of Indiana County, steers turned in an average of 90 cents including the grand and reserve grand champions, 78 cents without the top two.
