FARM FORUM our readers write
(Continued from Page Aid)
hours with nothing to show for it.
In June of 1987 there were
14,845 producers sending milk to
-plants in Federal Order 2. Last
month, one year later, there are
13,954.1 have to applaud the 959
dairy farmers who were smart
enough to say they had enough.
They are the ones that know deep
down in their hearts that it really
won’t get belter next year.
I don’t want to give readers the
wrong impression, but sometimes
a few tears and a few biting
remarks will stir up enough trouble
to bring about some good- the old
addage “the squeaky wheel gets
the oil” comes into play.
Let’s not sit back on our
haunches and take it on the chin
when the 1985 Farm Bill expires.
Every fanner in America knows
that lower prices in the food indus
try are popular with the voters and
the urban congressman & senators

Lancaster Farming, Saturday, 20, IWO-Ajff'
will do everything in their power to
ensure that corporate farms sur
vive and the family farm makes
just enough to force himself to say
it’ll be better next year, thus keep
ing him in the business and creat
ing a popular response from the
voters.
The average American spends
33 cents out of every dollar to pay
taxes but will only spend 16 cents
to eat
Why? Because the government
is run on the tax money and they
vote on their salary. We don’t vote
on ours, we rely on co-ops and ag
leaders to convey our story.
What’s my beef? The same peo
ple are advising congressmen and
senators about the ag community
today that were doing it 20 years
ago. They were wrong 20 years
ago and once again they are wrong
today. We need better voices
speaking for the farmer. The dairy
industry determines what the rest
of the farming industry’s fate is. If
the dairy industry flourishes, the
beef and grain farmer’s business
flourishes, if they do better, the
agriculture equipment dealer does
better, etc. So why are we accept'
ing pre-1970 wages? Why are we
not calling our Congressman?
Why aren’t we squeaking? The
time is now for $l5 milk. The time
is now for production quotas if
necessary. The time is now to stop
the rapid decline in family farms.
The time is now to write or call
your congressman. The time is
now to get rid of the people that are
promoting $l2 milk during a
drought when we should have been
receiving SIS in the first place.
It takes each and every farmer’s
commitment to realize the objec
tive of a fair price for our product.
Let’s not be the slaves any longer.
Let’s take some action, look
around, talk to your neighbor. Who
knows, maybe next year we all will
be able to buy the tractor we
needed 10 years ago!
