QUARRYVILLE, (Lancaster)
—Testing and research at the new
ly completed Quarryville alfalfa
plant breeding station are directed
by plant breeder David lessen and
assistant breeder Ed Poynor.
lessen, a Minnesota native, has
been with Pioneer Hi-Bred Inter
national, Inc., for nearly two years.
Prior to joining Pioneer he was a
forage breeder for a regional
cooperative in lowa.
His academic career includes a
bachelor’s degree in agronomy
from the University of Minnesota,
a master’s degree in plant breeding
at lowa State University and a doc
torate degree in plant breeding and
cytogenetics also from the Univer
sity of Minnesota.
The key objectives of the new
station is to develop new varieties
for the forage-rich Northeast.
‘This station strengthens our
ability to develop varieties for this
area,” Jessen said.
Ed Poynor serves as assistant
plant breeder at the Quarryville
site. He started with Pioneer in
1979, after he earned a master’s
degreein agronomy from Ohio
Slate University.
He was assigned to identify
