Scientists will also discuss
research on pasture management.
One current research projects uses
a forward grazing technique for
high producing cows. In this study,
cows graze a new strip of pasture
every 12 hours. By using high
tension fencing, animals can be
rotated very frequently from pas
ture to pasture with little labor
required.
At the university’s dairy farms
on campus, visitors will leant
about studies on the digestibility of
forage treated with compounds
such as sodium-potassium based
drying agents. These compounds
are applied at the time of cutting,
and help to speed up the rate that
forages dry down to become hay.
This means the forage is ready to
bale sooner than non-treated hay.
