    Old-Time Fiddlers’ Fair
Nineteenth century music play
ed on 19th century instruments
will give visitors to Genesee Coun
try Museum on August 19 and 20 a
weekend full of hand-clappin’,
toe-tappin’, old-time fiddle music
at the annual Old Time Fiddlers’
Fair.
More than 100 of the best musi
cians in the east are expected to
perform over the two-day event,
held under a huge tent set up on the

music begins at 11:00 a.m. each
day, and continues until 5:00 p.m.
Then, the musicians will get
together and play for a half-hour of
square-dancing on the meadow.
Alice Clemens, “The Queen of
New York State Fiddlers,” will
emcee the Fair. She is a veteran
contest fiddler and square dance
caller and serves as Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of the North

American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame
and Museum Institute.
In addition to the fiddle music,
visitors may expect to hear 19th
century music played on ham
mered dulcimers, string basses,
musical saws, harmonicas and the
spoons.
To preserve the 19th century
atmosphere of the village museum,
electric instruments, blucgrass
bands and country-and-wcstcrn
groups will not perform. Backup
musicians are available to perfor
mers at no charge.
All fiddlers or players of non
eleclrified stringed instruments are
invited to participate in the Fid
dlers’ Fair. There is no entry fee
and no prizes are given, but anyone
who plays on stage will have their
admission fee to the museum
refunded. The fair is not a contest,
but a gathering of aficionados of
19lh century string music. In pre
vious years, participants have

bourine player to a 96-year-old
tiddler.
In addition to the live perfor
mances, the Fiddlers’ Fair will fea
ture exhibits and displays of instru
ment building techniques by area
craftsmen and displays of new and
vintage instruments.
Members of the Flint Hill Folk,
Genesee Country Museum’s own
folk group, will be on hand to pro
vide accompaniment for perfor
mers who request it, and to enter
tain the audience with traditional
music of the 19th century played in
authentic dress on authentic
instruments.
All the activities of the Annual
Old Time Fiddlers’ Fair are avail
able at no additional charge over
the regular museum admission of
$8 for adults and $3.50 forchildren
six through 14. A special two-day
ticket will also be available at a
reduced price of $12.50 for adults
and $5 forchildren six through 14.
Children under six and museum
members are always free.

Parking at Genesee Country
Museum is abundant and free, with
plenty of space available for cam
pers and motorhomes. Auxiliary
food facilities will be in operation
during the Fiddlers’ Fair and picn
ic tables are available at no charge.
It is recommended that visitors
bring folding chairs or a blanket to
sit on since seating is not provided
in the performance tent or in the
natural amphitheater on the Great
Meadow of the museum complex.
The 125-acre museum site is
located 20 miles southwest of
Rochester, NY between New York
Thruway exits 47 (Leroy) and 46
(Rochester). Maps and directions
to the museum are available at
each of the Thruway exits for the
asking. The museum is also
located 20 minutes west of Exit 10
(Avon) of Interstate 390.
Museum hours during August
arc 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.,
seven days a week. The museum
remains open daily through Octob
er 16, but closes at 4:00 p.m. on
weekdays.
