They love to travel and pledged to do so while they could enjoy it to the fullest. They earned the money the hard way. Said Mary, “The whole time we had the dairy, we just kept our heads right to the grindstone. In fact, I can hardly remember ever going out to dinner all the time we had dairy cattle.” Still, they’ve done just about everything anybody could want to do. Said Mary, “If we die tomor row, we can’t complain. It’s been wonderful.” And their, travels have Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser We had very pleasant weather for our trip to New York State. The first night was spent with our daughter, Cindy, who cooked us a nice venison meal. Then she drove us through game lands in Wyom ing County and we saw five deer, one racoon and one porcupine. I’d never realized before how awk wardly a porcupine moves. This large rodent with its stiff sharp bristles lumbered across the road in front of us as we moved slowly through the woods. We were lucky in finding the three couples that we visited as we only had their addresses. Said John, “There’s no nation on earth that’s been blest like this country.” The idea to share their inspira tional story with others first came from Dr. B. Leonard Snider, an Erie dermatologist, and Dr. Barry D. Stamm, Chief Opthamologist at Hamot Hospital in Erie. The book, hot off the presses, has been endorsed by the Erie Diabetes Association. Mary had Dr. David Kirkpatrick read it over for medi cal accuracy. He indicated that it gave “support to the beginning diabetic to let them know that they can lead a normal life.” lime that we phoned, we were only a few blocks or a few miles away. The first couple in Homer, N.Y. had recently moved from their poultry farm into a house in town. They showed us their home and garden and insisted that we stay for lunch. She even gave me several zucchini recipes as I’d taken some along for her. The next family lived near Auburn, N.Y. I had not seen them since 1981 when we went to Europe together. Their farm house had burned last year and a new one was built on the old foundation. She knows what it is to go to work with it and live with it. She gives no medical advice. She just speaks from her experience. Needless to say, Mary is in demand as a moti vational speaker for diabetics. She is scheduled to speak at the spring rally of the American Diabetic Association, Harrisburg. When she first wrote her book, a publisher wanted to make it into a sympathetic “feel sorry for Mary book.” That’s not what she had in mind. I had taken some of my garden sweet com along for them. We did a bit of fishing from the shores of the Susquehanna River and also Lake Stevens as we hadn’t taken our boat along on the trip. I caught three small perch but threw them back. On the way home we slopped at Amot and saw a couple that we met on the Alaska trip last year. He has a large flower garden. "P.V.C.
