First, these practices are designed to slow down runoff and increase infiltration. This works when those scattered, intense sum mer showers hit. It increases the chance that all the rainfall will soak into the dry parched soil. “Muddy water running out com rows up and down the slope is lost as far as helping to produce a crop,” added Bubb. Second, the increased infiltra tion not only helps end the drought conditions, it helps prevent drought effects on crops. More moisture soaks into the groundwa ter in the spring due to soil conser vation practices and is available for future crop growth. “Water that runs off is lost for crop produc tion,” commented Bubb. “I remember one Lehigh County'far mer telling me as he applied strips and diversions, T want to so con fuse the water so that it can never find its way off my farm.’ That’s a great philosophy.” Another drought benefit can be obtained from using conservation tillage practices such as no-till planting. Crop residues act as a mulch and provide another way of conserving soil moisture. “Prevention is the name of the game,” said Bubb. “We can’t con trol the weather but the effects of weather changes can be lowered for the farmer with soil and water conservation practices.” HOURS: Mon , Fri. 8 AM - 8 PM Tues., Wad., Thurs. 8 AM - 5:30 PM Sat. 8 AM - 2 PM
