HARRISBURG Officials
from several federal agricultural
agencies met recently on the grow
ing Pennsylvania drought They
emerged with a firm commitment
to concentrate available resources
on meeting needs of Pennsylvania
agriculture within existing prog
ram authority.
Calling the current drought situ
ation “a real setback” to the con
tinued improvement in agricultur
al economic health over the past
several years, State Emergency
Board Chair Don Unangst called
on all agencies to take all actions
possible to help Pennsylvania far
mers and others affected by the
drought. Unangst is state executive
director of the Agricultural Stabili
zation and Conservation Service,
which is the federal agricultural
agency charged with coordination
of disaster efforts.
The Board also heard reports
from all agencies on current
actions already underway to meet
the crisis.
While many programs are
already in place, other programs
await further assessment of need as
harvest time approaches or further
federal action is taken. All agency
heads committed their agencies to
being in position to move rapidly
as conditions worsen and new poli-
