Milk production in Pennsylvania
during May was 906 million
pounds, down 1 percent from May
of 1987, according to the Pennsyl
vania Agricultural Statistics
Service.
The number of milk cows in the
state during the month averaged
713,000 head, up 1,000 from April
but 5,000 less than May 1987. Pro
duction per cow averaged 1,270
pounds, 80 pounds more than
April but unchanged from May a
year ago.
In the 21 states surveyed, May
milk production totaled 11.0 bil
lion pounds, 1 percent more than
May 1987. The number of milk
cows in those states averaged 8.63
million head, 70,000 less than May
1987. Production per cow average
1,280 pounds, 51 pounds more
than April and 21 pounds more
than the previous May.
During the January-March per
iod, the 21 selected states pro
duced 84.7 percent of U.S. produc
tion.

BUTLER Philip R. Ander
son of State College, Pa. has been
named Extension Dairy Agent in
Butler, Beaver and Lawrence
Counties according to Dr. Homer
Mazer, Extension Director for the
Western Region of Penn State’s
Cooperative Extension.
Anderson, a 1988 graduate of
Pennsylvania Slate University,
holds a B.S. Degree in Dairy Pro
duction. While at Penn State Phil
was a member of the Dairy Science
Club and President of the Penn
State Rifle Club. He served as a
Research Aide to Dr. A. Jud Hein
richs in studies concerning the
nutritional needs of dairy replace
ment stock.
Mr. Anderson brings an
expanded program of dairy man
agement technology to the three
counties including: computerized
nutritional systems, bam ventila
tion design and analysis, a milking
systems review, and basic dairy
farm financial management
methods.

ment Stock study in early Septem
ber. His first Tri-County Dairy
Newsletter will soon be in the
hands of farmers throughout the
area he serves.
Dr. Mazer points out that Phil’s
assignment is to add to and com
plement the activities of other
Extension Agents currently con
ducting educational programs for
dairymen in the three counties
where he is to be working. Dr.
Mazer also advises that Anderson
will not be expected to take charge
of the 4-H Dairy Clubs, but will
instead serve them as a program
resource person.
Mr. Anderson is the son of Paul
and Barbara Anderson of State
College, Pa. and his grandfather
was a lifelong dairyman in Penn
Township of Butler County.
