in previous competitions his sister,
Emily Weaver, always outscored
him. Now that she is no longer
competing, because she works as a
summer intern at the county exten
sion office, Weaver topped the
competion in beef judging, oral
reasoning and overall judging. The
Ephrata High School senior is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Ray
Weaver.

senior division. Teammates were
Arlissa Snavely, Woolies Club;
and Dwayne Livengood, Red Rose
Beef Club.
According to Chet Hughes,
county extension livestock agent,
the competition prepares the con
testants for the Penn State compet
ition to be held on July 25 to 28.
Hughes and Duff George, Ship
pensburg coach, originated the
contest in 1986 when Duff served
as a summer intern under Hughes.
On a rotating basis, three counties,
Lebanon, Lancaster, and Chester
host the competition that includes
12 to 15 southeast counties. This
year, Emily Weaver, summer
intern, organized the southeast
competition event.
The contestants judged six clas
ses of livestock and then defended
their placements with oral reason
ing. Scores are based on a total of
450 points. Hughes said, “Kids
with experience usually win, but
sometimes a kid will suprise you.
They may not do well in a previous
competition, but then top the next
one, because they’re having a good
day and their thinking is sharp.”
