als by the Product Research and
Development Committee of the
Dairy Board.
Twelve proposals, affecting 32
land grant universities and other
institutions were submitted. To
qualify, a dairy center had to have a
history of dairy research, and be
located in an area where the dairy
industry is strong. In addition, two
independent review panels com
posed of nationally recognized
academic, industry and govern
ment representatives and administ
drators closely evaluated propos
als with respect to technological
and administrative criteria.
The Dairy Food Research Cen
ter program is just one part of the
Dairy Board’s extensive research
effort, which has been ongoing
since .the Board’s inception in
1983. Through its competitive
research grant program, the Board
awards grants to individual scien
tists and other research groups.
The Board’s product research
efforts are divided equally
between the competitive research
grant' program and the dairy
research centers.
Some of the major research
efforts for dairy products under
way include the development of
cholesterol-free, low-fat dairy pro
ducts; a lite-butter product which
has 60 percent of the fat of regular
butter and is easily spread; and
indications that the nutrients found
in dairy products may help control
high blood pressure. Medical
research continues to support the
dairy industry’s message that dairy
calcium is die best deterrent to
osteoporosis, with doctors advis
ing that dairy products, not pills,
should be consumers’ primary
source of calcium.
