A34-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, May 28, 1988 West Germans Impressed With Pennsylvania Farming BY LOU ANN GOOD LEBANON “We are sur prised that America is so great and so nice,” said Helmut Porr in his halting English. “We had read things and heard things about the American way, not all of them good, so we decided to come and see for ourselves.” In just a few days, Porr along with wife and 26 other West Ger mans affirm that “America is as good or better than our country.” Porr said, “Your farmers work harder here; they are more dili gent.” He believes that children are also harder workers. He stated that in his country the children don’t seem to take as much interest in farming because they don’t believe there is any future in it. Porr was astounded by the green meadows (lawns) that surround local homes. It’s like saying, “This is my home or my castle.” But Porr likes the idea of no fences to sepa rate neighbors. The group is touring several eastern states through an agricul tural lour from Frankfurt, W. Ger- many. According to the groups’ local coordinator, Stan Bucher of Lebanon, all of the group members are either farmers or involved in agricultural industry. Wilhelm Becker, hog specialist who formulates feed and designs farm buildings in his country, commented, “Your bams are big ger than ours.” He is fascinated with the typical farm setups in the area. “You have your buildings and fields surrounding your home s. In our country, our houses are in towns and we must drive to our fields in the country.” on preparing dairy cattle for shows. Who can come? Weaver added, “I’m usually ashamed of my Dutch accent, but it came in handy this time. In 1721 my ancestors came from Germany; it’s amazing that I can communi cate with Germans after all these years.” Not everything in America impressed the tour group. They were apalled by New York City— but Porr declared, “The beauty of Pennsylvania makes up for it.” Becker patted his stomach and charged, “There’s too much good food here.” But he did have one complaint, “I don’t like eating com —that’s pig food.” Total $ iok the tractoi seat while staying with his Lebanon county hosts, David and June, this week.
