On page 16 of the 1988 Penn State Tree Fruit Production Guide is a listing of factors that can affect tree response to chemical thinning. Take the time to inspect each tree block early to evaluate fruit set. Look at the flowers. If the sep als are reflexing backward or away from a horizontal position, the fruit probably will drop. If the sepals are horizontal or more nearly verti- Fruit Diameter up to 3/8 inches 3/8 to 7/16 inches 7/16 to 9/16 inches over 9/16 inches Another factor to consider is the weather immediately preceding applications. Cloudy, cool weather causes leaves to absorb thinning materials better and leads to grea ter thinning response. E ATTENTION FARMERS: ® MORTON BUILDINGS, INC. Considering this year’s weather patterns, pay particular attention to bloom duration. In many instances, blocks set the majority of their fruit within two to three days. Under these conditions you can expect very little difference in fruit size. The size of fruit and its rate of development are the main factors in determining proper tim ing for application. The following guidelines may be useful in timing applications. Thinning Response fruit too small to be thinned maximum thinning response sprays only partially effective fruit too large to be thinned Many Golden Delicious trees across the state appeared to have a light flower crop this year. On these blocks, expect the fruit to be more difficult to remove. SPRING PRICE: (Pile* (übjtcl to chongo)
