ppm, this compound increases
gains by 11%, and feed conversion
by 12%; Muscle mass is increased
and total fat is reduced -- both
about 10%. Ractopamine can
probably be used with PST for a
combined effect that’s larger than
that of either compound alone.
WHAT’S THE COST
& WILL THEY PAY?
This has been a mystery. If the
companies know what the retail
cost of these products will be, they
aren’t saying. So it’s difficult to
predict what the pay back will be.
However there is a clue that the
cost may be so high that improve
ments in feed efficiency alone
won’t be sufficient to get a return
on investment. I say this because
any cost/benefit data published
always includes an incentive for
carcass quality. But it’s probably
wrong to assume that every packer
will reward producers adequately
for improving carcass quality. So
until these compounds are on the
market we can only guess on the
payback.
WHAT WILL BE THE
EFFECTS ON
THE INDUSTRY?
Some of the critics of PST fear
more tons of pork will depress
prices enough that small producers
won’t be able to compete. The
companies’ response is that every
one will have access to the drug,
and so everyone can compete. If
we’re talking daily injections, the
small producer could probably
handle that. And the very large
producer could probably hire
someone full time to do nothing
else but make injections. But pro
ducers with moderately si/cd sow
herds may be 100 big to do the
injections themselves, yet 100

small to hire it done.
I’m not sure anyone can predict
much hog prices will be depressed
with the use of PST or beta agon
ists. If prices come down, produc
ers may reduce hog numbers, as
they have in typical hog cycles, so
that prices could eventually come
back up. Again we’ll have to wait
and see what happens.
WHAT WILL THE EFFECT
BE ON CONSUMERS?
With the use of these new com
pounds, the consumer would be
getting a product with less fat and
more muscle. And surveys show
that consumers “have said“ they
would be willing to pay more for a
leaner product But we need to be
careful how much of this carcass
improvement the consumer will
actually see since most of the

SUMMARY
PST is a protein that improves
feediol performance and carcass
quality. PST must be injected. Beta
agonists, which are compounds
similar to adrenaline, can be fed
and provide the same benefits as
PST, but to a smaller degree. These
